brute insistence

7 MAY 2004

"It's true because it's true!" That's what you're saying?

You can certainly insist that you know the truth of the matter, but you know as well as I do that sometimes people insist they know the truth when they really don't.

And you certainly can insist that your Holy Scripture is the only true scripture, but you know as well as I do that each group claims its Holy Scripture is the only true scripture — and that can't be right.

And you certainly would agree that a Muslim's or Hindu's insistence that he knows the truth of the matter — and his ability to cite scripture all day long to "prove" it — would not put even the smallest of dents in your Christian faith.

And so you know — on some level — that brute insistence is amazingly unconvincing and has no place in thoughtful discussion.

No doubt: no awakening.” — Zen proverb
